In her first film at Bell Labs—after being asked by AT&T executives if she could make a promotional film for Bell Labs to improve AT&T's image on college campuses—Lillian Schwartz combines the generic black and white output of the computer with other images and materials like microscopic structures, oil and water. The different sequences were layered and sutured together by the help of an optical printer. In the optical printing process Schwartz also employed vibrant color filters—all together resulting in ecstatically complex motion manipulations. Enhanced by Gershon Kingsley's Moog-synthesized electronic soundtrack, Pixillation grasps the convergence between the natural world and the world of algorithmic computation.
