Utopia poses itself as an interactive video game plugged into the social consciousness of contemporary California. The viewer/player seemingly makes choices from the menu offering utopian or dystopian realities against the background of the ecological and social crisis of the modern city. However, the score is always the same: the winner loses, and it starts all over again. Performance artist Rachel Rosenthal acts as host of the macabre game, encouraging players and assessing their performance. Utopia was presented at the 8th VideoFest '95. The video is the single channel version of an interactive new media installation made for the Love Among the Ruins: Art and the Inspiration of L.A. exhibition at the Long Beach Museum of Art.
