Generations of Dutch children learned to read by means of a board that connects words with pictures. A primary school in Amsterdam combines this traditional teaching method with information about the present-day world. In The Reading Lesson, Johan van der Keuken pushes the “sabotage“ of the system even further by gradually replacing the “innocent“ textbook pictures with still images and scenes from political events, like a speech by Salvador Allende and the coup d’état in Chile of September 1973.
