With the ongoing appropriation of aesthetics, terms, and strategies of counterculture from far-right groups, questions have arisen about the potential of current forms of opposition. What happens when nonconformity, transgression, and freedom of expression are used in order to formulate “alternatives” that embrace amorality, aggression, and violence? How can ideas and values driven from the left still be reclaimed and defended? In the knowledge that such phenomena and questions are by no means new, this unmoderated conversation will look into past and present culture wars. The current rise of “alternative” neonazi groups will be discussed in relation to a larger subcultural history that predates the internet and encompasses politics, visual culture, and older media. The role of the left will be addressed with reference to this battle of appropriation and the hazardous and purposefully subversive logic of new “alternatives.”
