Jon Alpert's definitive masterpiece: Over the years, he has observed the everyday life of two criminals, who were initially free on probation. Ten years ago, he made a film about Rob, Freddy and Deliris, their common friend "Once in a Year of Crime" (1988). At that time the men were still small-time shoplifters. Meanwhile, times have gotten harder, and after jail all three have various problems in remaining clean and staying away from crime. Again and again hopes are raised and new attempts are made, to get everything to work, only to slip in the mud again. It is a film, that sticks quite close to its protagonists. One feels how they feel, think and fight. Their fate is stirring, however the typical "hazy" camera work of Jon Alpert manages to present it from a neutral distance. Neither accusation nor pity is there, Alpert simply shows, how shitty life can be. A thriller about force, prostitution and drugs.
