Starting point for retroYou r/c is a common computer game, into the programming code of which Leandre entered. This code is the basic material for changes Leandre under took on several levels. The focus of the art work is on the programming, more than on the spatial materialisation of the code in an installation. Three results of Leandre’s work are on exhibition, representing various degrees of artistic manipulation of the software. These three modifications are to be understood as separate works, and also as the representatives of further possible modifications. As the digital copy of a code is always similar to the original, endless variations are possible, at least theoretically, without loss of the actual basic code. In the first modification, [RCOl] ACCLAIM THE HOOD, the only change effected is the behavior of the racing cars by freeing them of gravity. The original game environment is still recognisable, but the cars are no longer steerable in the original sense. In the second modification [RCO2] BUTTERFLY OVER FLOW: FCK TH GRAVITY CODE, the original virtual play ground has given way to a nearly totally abstract back ground: visually very attractive, but difficult to navigate in. This variation basically plays itself and takes the viewer along into a virtual world which is purposely quite far removed from a real-world simulation. The highest degree of abstraction and reprogramming is achieved in the third modification, [RC03] RED HOOD RED BOOT, running all by itself, just like a screen-saver.
