Viola Stephan THE MAKING OFde/lu, 2005, 86:00 'The Making of is a film about vision, neuroscience and filmmaking based on the analogy of visual perception and filmmaking. The central questions are: how creative is science and how objective is film? It explores current neuroscientific research in the field of visual perception at some of the most renowned research institutes in Germany and the United States. It reflects a paradigm shift that points to a decentral, almost holistic world view: the connectivity of the neural structure of the brain becoming the central issue in science, the meaning of context becoming more important than the function of single cells. The film follows scientists, their explanations and experiments on visual perception and tries to describe their methods of gaining knowledge, giving glimpses at how documentary filmmakers try to capture their objects.
