After a panel-related screening, this Salon Talk provides a forum in which to discuss concerns regarding artistic projects realised in Asia and shown in Europe. The relationship between ‘here’ and ‘elsewhere’ provides a point of departure to reflect on the (im)possibilities of shifting spaces as well as on the politics of image production.

Providing a forum in which to discuss concerns regarding artistic projects realised in Asia and shown in Europe, this Salon Talk takes its title from NCS’s recent film Near Mandalay. After a panel-related screening, the speakers will introduce particular projects that designate a web of relational movements: from London to Karachi/Pakistan, places near Mandalay in the military dictatorship of Myanmar (Burma), and Asian women's films in Berlin.

The relationship between ‘here’ and ‘elsewhere’ provides a point of departure to reflect on the possibilities and impossibilities of shifting spaces as well as on the politics of image production. Asking questions regarding dislocation and origin, the panel will also investigate the specific political conditions and impact created through the presentation of these projects in a European art festival such as transmediale. The question of the title points towards a particular filming perspective and also indicates implicitly the different spans of wandering between localities of both production and presentation.
